CHECK BACK JANUARY 2012.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UMatter2Us turns WordPress into a web-based <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Learning_management_system\" rel=\"nofollow ugc\">learning management system<\/a> (LMS).<br \/>\nThe primary motivation behind this effort is the perceived deficiency of existing tools, e.g. Blackboard, for the effective<br \/>\ncreation of a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Student-centred_learning\" rel=\"nofollow ugc\">learner-centered classroom<\/a> environment.<\/p>\n<p>The name of the system is a double entendre:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>You Matter to Us<\/strong><br \/>This interpretation acknowledges the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_constructivism\" rel=\"nofollow ugc\">social constructivist pedagogy<\/a> that underlies the system.  The system is designed to foster a learning community in which all members work to help others have rich, meaningful learning experiences.  In such an environment, every member of the community is important\u2013you matter to us\u2013we wouldn\u2019t have as deep an experience without you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>University Matter, To Us<\/strong><br \/>Members of a learner-centered classroom see a college education not as a means to an end, but as an end in and of itself.  The system is designed to foster an intrinsic love of learning that will carry on throughout life.  It is designed to produce \u201cenlightened citizens who live meaningful and productive lives\u201d through self-aware, reflective study.  It\u2019s how we see university matter, the stuff you study in college.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The basic principles upon with the system is built:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_constructivism\" rel=\"nofollow ugc\">Social Constructivist Pedagogy<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mastery_learning\" rel=\"nofollow ugc\">Mastery learning approach<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Self-directed, flexible learning<\/li>\n<li>All members of the learning community are learners, including the \u201cprofessor\u201d; all are equals<\/li>\n<li>Mutual trust, respect and support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Key features of the system include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Robust peer and self-evaluation tools designed to make all community members competent to recognize quality as a precursor to producing quality work<\/li>\n<li>Multiple paths for achieving all learning goals allowing community members to select or create paths most appropriate to their own learning styles<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCommunity health indicators\u201d that allow community members to monitor their own and each other\u2019s learning trajectories.
